GASTONIA, NC – A woman died in a fire that burned through a home on Grier Street in Gaston County on Sunday.
Officials say the fire broke out around 11:40am. Firefighters were able to get four people who were inside the home to safety, but 77-year-old Sally Vernon died.
Emergency management says paramedics treated a firefighter for heat-related injures and a police officer for minor burns.
A smoke detector in the home was working and alerted the people inside to the fire.
Investigators say the cause of the fire was accidental but did not list a cause. Damage is estimated at $80,000.
