Dense fog advisory in effect Tuesday morning

A Dense Fog Advisory is in effect for much of the region until 10 a.m. Tuesday as widespread fog reduces visibility to less than 1/4 of a mile for Avery, Ashe, Watauaga, Alexander, Burke, Caldwell, Iredell, Lincoln, Catawaba and Rowan counties.

The dense fog has formed due to cold air damming – a weather phenomenon where cool air becomes wedged along the mountains while moist Gulf air streams above. Calm winds overnight, combined with lingering moisture from yesterday’s rain has allowed fog to thicken.

Key Impacts:

  • Visibility – Reduced to less than 1/4 of a mile in many spots, especially along I-40, I-77 and mountain passes.
  • Travel – Hazardous driving conditions expected during the morning commute

Tips for Safe Travel:

  • Slow Down – Allow extra time to reach your destination
  • Use Low Beams – High beams reflect off the fog and reduce visibility further
  • Increase Distance – Keep plenty of space between your car and others on the road
  • Stay Alert – Watch for sudden visibility changes, especially near rivers, lakes and within valleys

The thickest fog will lift by mid to late morning, but some patchy fog will linger through the day. Get the latest updates from the WeatherWise team by dowloading the WCCB Weather App.
