Gov. Cooper awards UNC legend Roy Williams with the Order of The Long Leaf Pine

RALEIGH, N.C. – Governor Roy Cooper presented longtime North Carolina basketball coach Roy Williams with the Order of the Long Leaf Pine, the State’s Highest Honorary Society.

“Coach Williams exemplifies what it means to be a Tar Heel and a North Carolinian,” said Governor Cooper. “From his time on the court to his philanthropic endeavors, Coach William’s work and legacy continues to impact our state. I am excited to recognize his contributions and welcome him to the Order of the Long Leaf Pine.”

Williams was a recipient for his impact on North Carolina while coaching the Tar Heels’ basketball team. In his remarks, he discussed his time as UNC’s basketball coach and thanked his wife, Wanda, for her support during his remarks Thursday.

Williams coached the Tar Heels for 18 seasons and went 485-163 (.748) during his tenure. He led the team to three national championships, five Final Four appearances and three ACC tournament championships.

Off the court, coach Willaims and Wanda have supported students through the Carolina Covenant Scholarship and Chancellor’s Science Scholars Program, according to the news release.
