DALLAS, N.C. (News Release) — As more individuals seek to live a self-reliant lifestyle, the NC Cooperative Extension is here to provide valuable resources to help make that a reality. Whether you’re a homesteader, a beginner farmer, an established farmer looking to diversify, or simply an agriculture enthusiast, this workshop has something for everyone.
The Homesteading: Backyard Basics Workshop will be held on Saturday, January 25, 2025, from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. The event will feature six new workshops, including:
Edible Landscaping
Getting Started with Dairy Goats
Homesteading 101
Medicinal Herbs for Tea
Native Perennial Crops
Soap Making
Sourdough Starter 101: Cultivating Your Own Yeast
Participants will also receive valuable educational resources and materials from all nine workshop sessions.
In the event of inclement weather, a make-up date has been set for February 1, 2025.
Held at the Citizens Resource Center (1303 Dallas-Cherryville Hwy., in Dallas), the workshop will allow participants to register in advance for two morning sessions and one afternoon session.
Instructors include experts from the NC Cooperative Extension with experience in agriculture, horticulture, and food preservation.
“Skills related to gardening, meat production, and food preservation are essential to achieving a sustainable food supply,” said Lara Worden, program coordinator and instructor. “This workshop brings together a diverse group of Extension experts to help participants expand their homesteading knowledge and practices.”
The registration fee is $40 per person, which includes lunch and all session materials. Online registration is required by January 13, 2025. For more information, contact Lara Worden at lara_worden@ncsu.edu or call 704-922-2118.
