CHARLOTTE, N.C. — Monday night marks the first full Moon of 2025. The January full Moon is called ‘The Wolf Moon’ because of the idea wolves can be heard howling at the Moon more this time of year. The Moon was officially full at 5:26 pm Monday evening, but will appear full over the next couple of days.
Mars will also appear to the lower left of the Moon around 6 pm. The Moon will slowly slide in front of the red planet around 9 pm Monday — this is known as lunar occultation.
Lunar occultation occurs when the Moon completely covers another celestial object. In the case of the January full Moon — it is the planet Mars.
Weather conditions are cold, but clear for viewing the full Moon across the Carolinas.
The next full Moon is on February 12th. This Moon is referred to as the Snow Moon.
