Crooked Creek Wildfire 55% contained, evacuation order lifted
MCDOWELL CO., NC – The evacuation order for the Crooked Creek Community in McDowell County lifted Thursday morning after an out of control wildfire forced residents to flee. The fire began Wednesday afternoon near Old Fort after gusty winds caused a tree to fall on power lines. The fire quickly spread due to dry and gusty conditions. The Crooked Creek Fire was 1 of 3 wildfires reported to have started Wednesday in McDowell County. Emergency crews were able to make significant progress overnight as the weather improved leading to lower fire activity.
As of 6:55 a.m., the wildfire is estimated to have burned 250 acres, and is now 55% contained. According to officials, no injuries or fatalities have been reported. The fire damaged 1 home and destroyed multiple outbuildings.
Emergency personnel will remain on-site Thursday to continue efforts to contain the fire and monitor any changes. McDowell County emergency officials say they are also continuing to work closely with local, state, and federal agencies to ensure the safety of residents.
