Charlotte to welcome a professional women’s basketball team as part of new ‘UPSHOT League’
CHARLOTTE, N.C. – Charlotte will be home to one of four teams in The UpShot League, a new professional women’s basketball league.
The other three franchises will be in Jacksonville, Florida, Savannah, Georgia, and Greensboro, North Carolina. The league is set to launch in May of 2026.
“We are beyond thrilled to be able to launch this league and provide another quality platform for women to continue being a part of the sport they love, whether it is a player on the court or a staff member in the front office,” Zawyer Sports CEO Andy Kaufmann said. “We are also grateful to be able to share this vision with several prominent and passionate individuals in our ownership group that left their own footprints in the field of athletics and entertainment.
Charlotte will play their games at Bojangles Coliseum. The UpShot League will consist of 40 regular-season games, 20 at home and 20 on the road.
“Charlotte has long been a city where sports thrive, boasting a rich tapestry of teams and events that cater to a diverse fan base and contribute to our vibrant sports culture,” Charlotte Regional Visitors Authority CEO Steve Bagwell said. “Bojangles Coliseum is a venue with deep roots in our city’s history, and we are honored to host the UPSHOT League, where they will undoubtedly create new and exciting memories for our community.”
While the league will start with four teams, it plans to explore expansion opportunities to women’s basketball markets across the United States.
A Name-The-Team contest is now live on the team’s website at TheUpShotCharlotte.com. Season ticket options also begin at $44 per seat.
