WASHINGTON, DC – A newer strain of the Bird Flu virus has been detected in Nevada. According to the Nevada Department of Agriculture six dairy herds in the state stated positive for a new strain.
The USDA detected the newly infected herds on January 31st through a federal program that tests milk in large silos across the U.S. The strain is different from the other strain which has been circulating in other dairy herds across the country.
Experts are questioning how dairy cattle are being exposed and if the outbreak can be contained. The newer Bird Flu strain has been previously detected only in birds and people who had contact with infected birds.
Since last March, the USDA said the Bird Flu has been detected in 957 herds in 16 states. So far, there have been 67 confirmed human infections in the U.S.
