STATESVILLE, NC – A Statesville man will spend at least two years in prison for supplying fentanyl that led to an overdose death.
Iredell County Sheriff’s Deputies arrested 27-year-old Dakoda Drake in November of 2023 in connection to a 2022 overdose death.
At the time, deputies responded to a call about an unresponsive man at a home on Hickory Highway in Statesville.
Paramedics gave Julius Gunter NARCAN and then rushed him to the hospital, but he died.
Drake accepted a plea deal in the case on Tuesday, 4, 2025.
A judge sentenced him to 19 to 32 months for involuntary manslaughter and delivery of a schedule I controlled substance, along with an additional 6
to 17 months for a probation violation.
Sheriff Darren Campbell emphasized the dangers of fentanyl, saying “Fentanyl is a deadly drug that is taking far too many lives, and we will continue to hold those who distribute it accountable. This poison has no place in our community, and we will use every resource available to keep it off our streets and out of the hands of our citizens.”
