CHARLOTTE, N.C. — Executive Chef at Community Matters Cafe, Chayil Johnson has been recognized as semifinalist in the “Best Chef” category for the 2025 James Beard Awards. Joining him in the category is another Charlotte chef, Sam Diminich of “Restaurant Constance.” Another Charlotte notable, Supperland’s Colleen Hughes has been also recognized as a semifinalist in the mixologist category.

Rising’s Chris Gilmore visited Community Matters Cafe to meet Chef Johnson and learn how he and the business are giving back. The restaurant partners with the Charlotte Rescue Mission and hires those overcoming addiction and homelessness, teaching them life skills to get back on track.
