The N.C. Division of Motor Vehicles joins Gov. Josh Stein in recognizing School Bus Driver Appreciation Week

ROCKY MOUNT, N.C. — On Thursday, Feb. 13, the N.C. Division of Motor Vehicles joined Gov. Josh Stein in recognizing the week of Feb. 10–14, 2025 as School Bus Driver Week. The proclamation goes towards recognizing school bus drivers’ vital work and the need to address driver vacancies across the state.

In 2023, N.C. school systems reported that about 13% of their bus driver positions were vacant. As a result, N.C. students have faced longer commute times, longer walks to bus stops, and less reliable schedules.

Fortunately, in 2024, the N.C. Division of Motor Vehicles trained and certified 3,954 new bus drivers and renewed the certifications for another 7,440 bus drivers. In 2025, there are currently 29,000 certified school bus drivers in the state, more than double the states 14,000 school bus routes, ensuring safe and reliable transportation for N.C. students.

“The Division of Motor Vehicles has the important task of training and certifying school bus drivers in North Carolina,” said Commissioner Wayne Goodwin. “We take very seriously our duty to prepare and equip school bus drivers to safely deliver children to and from school every day.”
