Presidential sunshine ahead, watching for wintry weather Wednesday

Significant snow and ice probabilities are rising for the Piedmont on Wednesday.

Sunny skies and comfy highs have returned this Sunday afternoon after a stormy morning, but lows will drop like a rock overnight as cold air rushes into the Carolinas from the northwest following the passage of a cold front. Most locations will wake up to the teens and 20s to kick off our Presidents’ Day Monday. Despite plentiful sunshine, highs will struggle to clear the 30s and 40s across the board. Temperatures rise closer to normal in the 40s and 50s on Tuesday, but big changes arrive by midweek.

Cold air will return from the northeast by Tuesday evening as an area of Arctic high pressure sets up to our northwest. Temperatures will fall near freezing by Wednesday morning across the board as moisture approaches from the southwest. Models are suggesting temperatures will continue to fall throughout our Wednesday as the storm system sweeps through the Carolinas; this may lead to a wide variety of precipitation types across the WCCB Charlotte viewing area, with rain, freezing rain, sleet, and snow all on the table. There’s a strong chance we’ll see significant snow and ice totals along I-85 and northward. Regardless of what happens on Wednesday, bitterly cold air filters in behind the incoming system as lows dip into the 20s, teens, and single digits for the following few nights. Stay weather-wise over the coming days as the forecast becomes clearer.
