Tenants of two University apartments worried about health and safety
CHARLOTTE, NC — Black mold, lack of hot water and no AC in the summer. These are some of the concerns from people living in two University apartment complexes run by the same company.
What looks like black mold seems to be reappearing around Olivia Pudo’s shower after it was painted over in January. Pudo said she’s had black mold since she moved in back in May.
“I also have asthma. So it was a health a health concern issue for me that wasn’t addressed for quite a while,” explained Pudo.
Pudo lives in The Mill apartments, operated by Covenant Property Services. Covenant also owns The Union apartments located just a few minutes down the road. A former employee, who asked we hide her identity, said Pudo isn’t alone.
“There’s a lot of vacant units and people that are in the units with mold at The Mill and The Union apartments.
She shared photos with us showing what looks like mold in closets and other showers. She claims she took the pictures while inspecting other units.
“I’ve been silent for so long because I thought it was going to be a change, but it has not,” said the employee.
People living at both the Union and The Mill apartments also told us there have been issues with a lack of hot water, no AC and a green swimming pool that was closed for the summer.
Safety is also a concern. The employee claimed she was attacked by a squatter in one of the other units last month while she was on the clock. She filed a police report.
This employee says a majority of tenants are UNC Charlotte students.
“I think it just what scares me the most is how they continue to advertise this facility to new, younger students moving in families,” said Pudo.
We reached out to both apartment complexes for answers. We have not heard back.
