CHARLOTTE, NC – Charlotte-Mecklenburg Animal Care & Control (ACC) is adjusting its weekend hours to give people more time for adoptions, fostering, and community engagement.
Starting March 1, 2025, the main shelter at 8315 Byrum Dr. will be open from 9am until 5pm on Saturdays and Sundays.
This change is designed to be more accommodating on days with the most foot traffic. The goal is to make it easier for the community to visit, adopt, foster, and participate in programs like Staycations and Daycations. People can take a shelter dog home for up to five days (Staycation) or a few hours (Daycation). That gives the dogs a much needed break from the kennels.
Ongoing Space Crisis at ACC
ACC is at critical capacity. Despite ongoing adoptions, the number of animals entering the shelter continues to exceed the number finding homes.
Since Saturday, ACC has had 140 dogs enter the shelter not including around 10 to 15 that came in since 11 am Thursday.
The shelter is working hard to avoid having to make euthanasia decisions.
