UPDATE: Child dies from injuries after shooting in Lancaster, suspect killed by deputies identified

LANCASTER, SC – A six-year-old boy who was shot along with his mother at a home on Mosteller Drive in Lancaster on Sunday has died.

The coroner says the boy died from his injuries on Monday. The man accused of shooting him has been identified as 24-year-old Jacob Sobieraj.

The Lancaster County Sheriff’s Office says Sobieraj got into a shootout with deputies after he called 911 and said he killed a woman and her son.

There’s no update on the woman’s condition.

LANCASTER, SC – A woman and her child are fighting for their lives after they were shot inside a home in Lancaster County. Deputies say the man who shot them was killed by police.

The Lancaster County Sheriff says a man called 911 saying he killed a woman and her son on Mosteller Drive around 12:30 Sunday afternoon. When deputies arrived to the home, the Sheriff says they found the man in the yard with a gun. Authorities say the man was killed in a shoot out with deputies.

The woman and the child were both taken to the hospital with gunshot wounds. The sheriff’s office has not relased an update on their conditions.

“A very tragic event unfolded on Mosteller Drive,” said Sheriff Barry Faile. “First, our thoughts and prayers are with the family members and friends of those touched by this horrific incident. We pray that this woman and child will survive their injuries.”

The sheriff says the officers who fired their weapon will be placed on paid administrative leave pending the outcome of the investigation which is department protocol. SLED is investigating to find out what lead up to the shootings.

“We never want our deputies to be faced with what these deputies rode into today,” said Sheriff Faile. “We train for these scenarios all the time, and early indications show these deputies relied upon that training and acted lawfully and within our policy. We trust SLED to develop all the facts and provide answers for what occurred today.”
