UPDATE (3/24/25):
POLKTON, NC – Tire prints and broken glass mark the spot on Little Creek Road near Old Winfield Road where police say a man crashed a stolen SUV with his daughter in the vehicle on the passenger side.
Neighbors witnessed the moments when police caught up to a man who authorities say kidnapped his 6 year old daughter from her home on West Street in Polkton around 3am Monday. Several hours, an Anson County deputy working traffic near a school spotted the SUV, but the driver refused to stop which triggered the chase.
“During the pursuit, myself and several other officers tried to get in front of the vehicle and put out stop sticks tire deflation devices to end the pursuit because at that time our thing was the child’s well being,” Chief Tim Hutchinson from Polkton Police said.
Chief Hutchinson says the suspect ran off the road when he hit a curve driving 70 miles per hour. Hutchinson says the impact of the crash did not kill the child.
“No officers fired shots or anything, the collision did not hurt them,” Chief Hutchinson said. “We know nobody else shot the child, the father shot the child, then shot himself.”
Chief Hutchinson is working with the Anson County Sheriff’s Office and NC SBI to interview witnesses and collect evidence to outline the details and timeline of the case.
“We don’t know what happened prior to deputies being there at 3 in the morning until 8 this morning we didn’t even get a chance to talk to [the suspect] of course,” Chief Hutchinson said.
The suspect was airlifted to a Charlotte hospital in critical condition as remains there as of Monday evening. Medical examiners will perform an autopsy on the 6 year old girl to determine her official cause of death.
The family of the young girl declined an on camera interview but they did say “God is in control” and they are watching the child’s father’s condition closely. They also say they are surprised by his behavior and are hoping the investigation gives some clarity.
