Women’s History Month: Local Charlotte fashion designer partners with SHEIN
CHARLOTTE, NC — When it comes to fashion it’s not just what you wear, but how you wear it that matters.Β
Β Fashion designer Chanel Scales that’s what her brand Shingo is all about.Β
“Shingo is in Swahili and it’s about being confident. It is about walking with your head held high,β Scales said.Β
Chanel Scales is an established designer with 15 years of experience in the industry having worked with brands like Vince Camuto,Β Michael Kors and now SHEIN.Β
“I prayed on it, I manifested it, I acted like I was already a part of the program, and sure enough, I got an email saying that they wanted me to be a part of the project,β Scales said.Β
However, her journey to becomingΒ a fashion designer wasn’t easy.Β
“I feel like as a black woman, I have to constantly prove myself even though I have the experience. I have the garments.I haveΒ people saying that they’ve shot with me. It can be very challenging,β Scales said.Β
She’s now part of a collaboration with SHEIN that partners withΒ designers to give them a platform to launch their designs.Β
She’s produced four collectionsΒ and is now working on her fifth.Β
She said she wants women to not only look good, but feel good in her clothing.Β
βSo I feel like that was just my purpose at that moment was to be able to give women an opportunity to be confident in their own shoes and the garments that they wear.βΒ
Β She saidΒ that comes from empowering women to be confident, because that confidence will exude far beyond what you’re wearing.Β
“Even when you wear clothes, if you don’t feel good on the inside, that’s going to show.
So I definitely think that I do empower women. That is my ultimate goal, that I do empower other women.”
