Clouds carry into Thursday, near-record heat ahead

Highs will approach 90° for the first time in 2025 on Friday and Saturday.

The Carolina wedge is in full effect this Wednesday afternoon as temperatures near 80° in the Sandhills while the western Piedmont and Foothills are struggling to clear the 50s. We’ll want to watch for a few showers and storms as a warm front lifts through the Carolinas this evening. A strong storm or two is possible as the sun sets just before 8 p.m., but most communities will remain rain-free. Lows won’t fall far overnight into Thursday as we wake up in the 60s across the Piedmont and Foothills thanks to clouds and stiff southerly winds.

The mercury only rises from here. Despite the cloudy conditions, highs will surge into the 70s and 80s across the board Thursday afternoon. A few showers and storms are possible west of the Queen City, but short-range models are suggesting some sunshine could break out east of the Metro; areas that see more blue sky may reach into the upper 80s. Even more warmth arrives as we close out the workweek. Temperatures may crack 90° in parts of the Piedmont and Foothills for the first time in 2025 on Friday and Saturday. 87° is the record high for Friday; 88° is the mark to beat on Saturday. Our next significant rain chances crash into the Carolinas on Sunday – we’ll want to watch this system closely for severe weather potential.
