Pedestrian hit, killed in east Charlotte

CHARLOTTE, N.C. – A pedestrian died at the hospital after being hit and killed in east Charlotte on Friday night, according to the Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Department.

It happened around 8:30 p.m. on Barrington Drive near The Plaza. When police arrived, they located a pedestrian seriously injured in the roadway and a damaged Ford Escape.

The pedestrian, 58-year-old Valerio Ramirez, was transported to the hospital with life-threatening injuries where he later died.

The Ford driver, 51-year-old Jose Garcia, was not injured.

Police said Garcia was traveling north on Barrington Drive when Ramirez, not in a crosswalk, was hit while crossing the road.

Neither speed nor impairment are believed to be contributing factors for Garcia. He was charged with having No Operators License.

Toxicology reports are pending for Ramirez.
