Dog kills skunk with rabies, fourth confirmed case in Gaston County in 2025

CHERRYVILLE, N.C. – A dog killed a skunk that tested positive for rabies, the fourth confirmed case in Gaston County of the year.

It happened around 6 p.m. on April 4 in the 2300 block of Whitworth Road in Cherryville, North Carolina. Police said no human made any contact with the skunk.

The skunk was impounded and sent to the NC Laboratory of Public Health in Raleigh for testing. The official results confirmed a positive test for rabies on Tuesday.

Police said the dog did not have a rabies vaccination and was humanely euthanized.

This is the fourth rabies case in Gaston County of 2025. A fox tested positive for rabies in January while two raccoons tested positive in March.
