Local brewery jumping on THC drink trend

CHARLOTTE, NC — One of the newest adult beverages is creating it’s own category. THC drinks have boomed in popularity in the last few years.

Resident Culture Brewing in Charlotte saw the trend early and jumped.

“We were looking at our data and looking at our numbers and seeing how younger generations were drinking a little bit less and just wanting to expand our portfolio,” saidΒ Resident Culture Brewing founder, Philip McLamb.

McLamb tells WCCB Charlotte the company started developing a THC drink back in 2023.

“We knew it could be big and I think we’re still just scratching the surface, said McLamb.

The hemp derived drinks are legal through a loophole in the 2018 Farm Bill.

McLamb said the drinks now make up about 20% of the breweries revenue.

According to research firm Fortune Business Insights, the THC drink industry is expected to top more than $100 billion by 2032.

Total Wine was the first domino to fall when it began clearing out shelf-space.

McLamb thinks consumers like the more health conscience adult beverage. Most drinks have less than 100 calories. He also says the understanding of marijuana use is widely accepted now more than ever.

“I think there’s less of a stigma around THC, you know, smoking, you can get THC other ways than just smoking now,” explained McLamb.
