NC Health Dept.: Mpox virus particles detected in wastewater
GREENVILLE, N.C. – The North Carolina Department of Health and Human Services is issuing an alert about the mpox virus in the state. That’s the virus was formerly known as monkeypox.
The NCDHHS says mpox particles were found through routine wastewater testing in Greenville. The detections were found in wastewater samples collected on March 25, March 28 and April 8 from a treatment plant.
This year, there have been two cases of mpox in the state. The new detections were determined to be another type not previously found in the state.
Health officials say the risk to the public remains low.
