Soggy start to workweek

Most communities in the WCCB Charlotte viewing area will see 1-3" of rain through Tuesday night.

Happy Mother’s Day! While we certainly could have worse weather for Mom’s big day, Mother Nature also could have done a lot better. Overcast skies and scattered rain chances will only intensify heading into the workweek as Gulf-based moisture flows into the Carolinas from the south. Monday is looking like a washout, with blanketing rain – heavy at times – dominating much of the day. While conditions may improve slightly on Tuesday, scattered showers and storms will erupt once again in the afternoon. Highs will struggle to clear 70° on Monday across the Piedmont and Foothills before warming well into the 70s on Tuesday. Most communities can expect 1-3″ of rain through Tuesday; localized amounts in the Foothills and High Country may approach 5″ over the next 48 hours.

While rain chances linger into Wednesday, the majority of the rain will fall over the two days prior. Even with most of the moisture moving out by Thursday, variable clouds and even a stray shower or two may stick around into the back half of the week ahead. Despite the absence of unabated sunshine, highs will quickly soar well into the 80s around the Metro on Thursday before hanging near 90° on Friday. A second rainmaking system may strike a glancing blow to the Carolinas by next weekend as it passes to the north, bringing more rain chances and slightly cooler air.
