NC and SC Attorneys General to WeChat: You have 30 days to address drug money laundering
CHARLOTTE, N.C. – North and South Carolina Attorneys General are demanding a popular messaging platform take action to stop the flow of money tied to fentanyl.
Jeff Jackson and Alan Wilson announced the effort on Monday, saying the platform WeChat is enabling money laundering operations linked to the deadly drug. Jackson says the app is being used by Chinese brokers to help Mexican cartels move drug money out of the U.S. and back to their suppliers.
Jackson says, “We are giving WeChat 30 days to show us specific steps that they are taking to address this. We are losing an average of six people per day to fentanyl. We believe that WeChat bears significant responsibility because their platform helps cartels get paid.”
This announcement comes following North Carolina Governor Josh Stein’s recent visit to Charlotte, where he pushed for funding for a fentanyl control unit.
