Remains of Lee Funderburk, reported missing in Charlotte in 2016, have been found in Davidson Co.

CHARLOTTE, NC – The remains of a man reported missing in Charlotte almost 10 years ago have been found about an hour away in Davidson County.

Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police were called to Clairemore Place in Charlotte on May 31, 2016 and filed a missing persons report for 53-year-old Lee Funderburk.

Family and friends had no idea what happened to him.

Workers at a scrapyard in Davidson County found skeletal remains inside a car on May 14, 2025.

The Davidson County Sheriff’s Office and the North Carolina State Bureau of Investigation (SBI) began processing the crime scene.

Detectives say the car belonged to Mattie Mae Funderburk, Lee Funderburk’s mother.

The remains were then identified as those of Lee Funderburk.

Investigators say the cause of death is homicide, but no other details have been released.
