We’ve got one of the nicest weather days in a while to kick off Memorial Day weekend. Today will be sunny, dry and not as breezy with highs in the low to mid 70s. Dewpoints in the 30s and 40s make it feel crisp and comfortable—a rarity we likely won’t feel again until fall. Open the windows and enjoy some time outside. Saturday stays quiet, with a few more clouds and highs once again staying below average in the mid to upper 70s. It’s still dry, but clouds will increase late in the day as our next weather system approaches.
A warm front will lift from the south Sunday, increasing moisture and instability, especially by Sunday afternoon and evening. Scattered showers and thunderstorms will be possible, right around the time fans are heading to the Coca Cola 600 at Charlotte Motor Speedway. While it’s not a total washout, the timing could bring delays or interruptions to the race due to nearby lightning or downpours. Memorial Day Monday is looking more unsettled. Another wave of energy aloft and a stalled front over the southeast will keep rain chances going. Expect more showers by the afternoon and a few embedded thunderstorms, especially later in the day and into Monday night. It will be cooler than normal, with highs in the low to mid 70s.

Tuesday through Thursday, the pattern stays active. Multiple pulses of energy will ripple through the region, interacting with a moist atmosphere and a lingering stalled boundary. This will fuel daily rounds of showers and scattered storms, mainly during the afternoon and evening hours. While it’s too early to pinpoint any severe threats, storm coverage may ramp up midweek as the atmosphere becomes more unstable. Right now, severe weather looks unlikely, but we’ll be keeping an eye on the potential for localized heavy rain leading to flooding.
