NEWTON, NC – Family members say justice has been served after a jury convicted a man charged with the murder of a woman in Newton.
Police were called to a home on South Caldwell Avenue for a report of shots fired in June of 2021 and found 51-year-old Iris Robinson lying in the yard.
Investigators say 64-year-old Jessie Crawford assaulted Robinson while she and others were setting up for a cookout, then left and came back later and shot her several times.
“Despite her challenges, she gave us strength, love and confidence to go after our dreams,” Robinson’s daughter, Astinee McLean, told the Court, calling Crawford’s horrific deed a “jealous act.” “He took something from us we can never get back. He killed the future we were meant to have with her. Nothing can bring her back, but justice can honor the life she lived and the love she gave.”
It took a jury a little more than an hour on Thursday to find Crawford guilty of first-degree murder.
A judge sentenced him to life in prison without parole.
