Summer-like feels return, monitoring Friday’s severe threat

We'll want to stay weather-wise for a few strong storms over the next two days.

After one of the coolest May days in Charlotte history, the weather finally begins to act its age again as we close out the final workweek of the month. Mostly cloudy skies and higher humidity levels overnight will keep temperatures on the mild side in the 50s and 60s as we wake up Thursday morning. Despite the mostly cloudy skies, steady southwesterly flow will push most locations in the Piedmont and Foothills into the mid-to-lower 80s. While most communities will stay dry for much of our Thursday, rain chances increase as we head into the evening and overnight hours. While a few showers and storms may be on the heavier side Thursday night, the overall severe threat is very low.

We’ll want to stay weather-wise on Friday as a sharp cold front slices through the Carolinas. Thursday night’s rain may linger past sunrise, but short-range models suggest at least some sunshine returns by noon Friday. Scattered strong-to-severe storms are possible in the afternoon as the front marches through the WCCB Charlotte viewing area. Damaging wind gusts and significant hail are the main threats, but the tornado risk will also be squarely on the table Friday afternoon and evening.

On the bright side – literally – we have fantastic weather waiting for us this weekend. Sunny skies and highs near 80° make themselves at home in the Carolinas on Saturday and Sunday as humidity levels take another tumble. Medium-range models keep significant rain chances at bay through much of June’s first week, which begins on Sunday. Highs may crack 90° in the Queen City for the first time this year next Wednesday; enjoy the “cooler” air while it lasts.
