Strong storms possible Friday, beautiful weekend ahead
We'll want to stay weather-wise for a line of strong-to-severe storms Friday afternoon.
Another cloudy day is underway across the WCCB Charlotte viewing area, but highs in the Piedmont and Foothills have largely found their way into the 80s in spite of the grayness. Scattered showers and storms have started to erupt south and east of I-85; the rain will become more widespread as we head into the evening and overnight hours. While the severe threat is very low, we may see a few heavy storms, especially south and east of the Metro. Most – if not all – of the rain clears out to the east by sunrise Friday.
Our final day of the holiday-shortened workweek will start on the cloudy side, but some sunshine will begin to peek out by the early afternoon, particularly around the Metro and eastward. Unfortunately, the sunshine may end up being a bad thing, as it may provide more energy for storms that begin rolling through the WCCB Charlotte viewing area by 2 PM. A Level 2 out of 5 severe risk has been posted for the Piedmont and Foothills; damaging wind gusts and significant hail are the main threats, but the tornado risk remains squarely on the table – especially around the Metro and eastward – as we head into the evening as a cold front slices through the Carolinas.
The ride getting there will be bumpy, but the weekend looks fantastic for the Queen City. Northwesterly flow on the back side of the incoming system will lead to more clouds and a few showers in the High Country, but Saturday and Sunday should be stunning days for communities east of the Continental Divide. Highs around the Metro will top out near 80Β°, but drastically lower humidity levels will make the heat quite manageable. Enjoy the good times while they last; big-time heat and humidity lie ahead as we move into the first week of June.
