Haze slowly flushes out, heat cranks up
Highs may approach 90° in the Queen City by the end of the week.
June’s first workweek is off to a sunny start, but our third-straight day of hazy skies has dimmed and grayed what would otherwise be a bright and blue day. Canadian wildfire smoke drawn in from the northwest continues to be the culprit of the haziness, but clearer skies steadily build back in this week as the jet stream pushes eastward and southeasterly surface winds return. Highs will take advantage of the incoming unabated sunshine, running into the mid-to-upper 80s across the Piedmont and Foothills on Tuesday and Wednesday.
The National Hurricane Center (NHC) is monitoring the Carolina coastline for potential tropical development by the end of the week. Right now, the NHC is giving this region a 10% chance of becoming a named storm over the next seven days; its window for cyclogenesis likely much shorter. Regardless of development, a broad area of low pressure will likely sweep along our coast between Wednesday night and Saturday morning, bringing scattered storms to many North and South Carolina beaches. While rain chances look isolated at best for the eastern half of the WCCB Charlotte viewing area, clouds and cooler air will wrap around this system as it moves to the northeast. The first name on the 2025 Atlantic hurricane season list is Andrea.
Our next significant rain chances don’t arrive until the weekend; highs will likely soar near 90° around the Metro on Friday and Saturday before the moisture approaches in the form of a cold front from the northwest. The weekend won’t be a washout, but the best opportunities for storms lie between Saturday afternoon and early Sunday morning. We’ll also notice an uptick in humidity levels as we move into June’s first full weekend.
