Catawba Co. mass shooting victim was once bullpen catcher with Hickory Crawdads

CATAWBA CO., N.C. – 58-year-old Shawn Hood was killed in the mass shooting at the Catawba County house party. We’ve learned he was associated with the people who planned the party, but investigators are still working to learn more about why Hood was at the party.

We’ve also learned that Hood, who lived in Lenoir, was a volunteer with the Hickory Crawdads baseball team. WCCB Charlotte’s Kaci Jones got the chance to speak with the team’s general manager about Hood. Douglas Locascio says, “(Hood) was a bullpen catcher, so it was a volunteer kind of position with the Crawdads. Back in the late 90s, (he) did a little over three and a half seasons with the Crawdads. Former Crawdad General Manager David Haas…just talked about what a heart and passion (Hood) had for the Crawdads, and for baseball in general. We have a saying around here, once a Crawdad, always a Crawdad.”

Locascio says Hood’s death is a reminder that we are never promised tomorrow, and to appreciate every day. The Hickory Crawdads held a moment silence at Tuesday night’s game to honor Hood.
