Coastal low brings showers, heavy rain to the Carolinas

AM Weather Headlines:

  • Coastal low brings soaking rain
  • Weekend storm threat ahead
  • Humid and unsettled pattern building
Discussion:
Clouds will build in today with highs reaching the low to mid 80s. A coastal low drifting up from Florida will pull in tropical moisture, bringing showers into the region late this evening and overnight. This likely won’t be the first named storm of the Atlantic Hurricane season, but it wil be bringing impacts to the Carolinas as it moves north along the coast. The heaviest rain will be for areas east of I-77, with some spots near the Charlotte metro picking up a half inch or more through Thursday. Thursday will stay cloudy, cooler and damp most of the day. Rainfall totals east of I-77 could push 1-2 inches in spots. The good news is that there is not a severe threat with this system, just a soggy, cooler day with highs mainly in the low to mid 70s.
By the weekend, attention turns to a cold front. Storms are possible both Saturday and Sunday with warm, humid air in place. We could finally see our first 90 degree day of the season by Saturday afternoon, with a few stronger storms possible as the front moves into the region. The front doesn’t fully clear the Carolinas and stalls nearby into early next week, which keeps daily rain and storm chances in play. It will be an unsettled pattern with waves of moisture riding along the stalled boundary with highs back into the low to mid 80s through early next week.
