Charlotte protest calls for end to nationwide ICE raids
CHARLOTTE, NC — Members of the Charlotte community are calling for an end to ICE raids around the country.
Numerous ‘No Kings’ protests planned for Charlotte and surrounding areas
“They’re crippling this country because immigrants built this country,” said Sebastian Feculak from Charlotte-Metrolina Labor Council.
Monday’s rally coming as days of protests in LA escalate in violence. The protests started after ICE arrested large groups unauthorized immigrants in areas with large Hispanic populations.
“Friday was horrific and this weekend was scary. It was a period of time where many immigrant families, both in LA and Charlotte, Monroe, wherever you may have been witnessed, state sanctioned violence,” said Stefania Arteaga.
One man arrested in LA was David Huerta. the president of the California chapter of the Service Employees International Union.
Members of SEIU here in Charlotte called for Huerta’s immediate release. They say he was hurt while observing and documenting an ICE raid last week.
Huerta was released from a LA jail on Monday.
Those at the Charlotte rally say they worry the ICE raids will only get worse in our community.
