UPDATE: Former Charlotte hotel where woman and baby were found dead is closing

UPDATE:

CHARLOTTE, NC – A former Charlotte hotel that had been used as a drug recovery center is closing following the deaths of a woman and a baby.

The director of the HELP Program says he is closing operations at the Baymont Hotel because of concerns about the safety and wellbeing of the participants, staff and surrounding community.

Cedric Dean says the closure is due to escalating public safety challenges, including drug activity, gun violence, and security threats occurring on or near the property.

According to a news release, during the closure, management will be working with public safety experts, attorneys, and neighborhood leaders to develop a comprehensive plan for addressing security risks, protecting staff, and restoring public trust.

“While the current conditions make it  unsafe to continue operations, our goal is not to retreat but to reset,”  said Cedric Dean, CEO of the HELP Program. “We are committed to doing the hard work necessary to contribute to the safety and vitality of our neighborhood.”

CHARLOTTE, NC – An investigation is underway after motel workers found a woman and a baby dead inside a motel in north Charlotte on Friday.

Charlotte-Mecklenburg police were called around noon to the Baymont by Wyndham on Equipment Drive off West Sugar Creek Road and I-85.

There is no word how the woman and baby died. Police say they do not suspect any criminal activity.

The owners of the Baymont Inn previously rented the space to Heal Charlotte, a transitional housing program for families experiencing homelessness.

The lease between Baymont Inn and Heal Charlotte ended on April 7th and another unaffiliated program running under the name H.E.L.P took over with similar services.
