Discussion
We’re riding the peak of a dangerous heat wave with highs pushing towards the triple digits and not much relief with record challenging max lows at night. A large dome of high pressure is baking the region. Keeping storm chances limited with dry air aloft, but trapping this tropical air mass close to the surface. Highs will push toward 100 today, with heat index values reaching 105-108 across much of the area. Overnight lows won’t fall below 75, which keeps the risk of heat related illnesses high, as our bodies can’t recover from the heat of the day. A Heat Advisory is in effect through 8pm Wednesday.
The ridge starts to weaken and shift west by midweek, which will allow scattered storms to fire up in the afternoon and evening Wednesday. The atmosphere will be pretty unstable thanks to the the high heat and humidity, which means some of these storms could have quite the kick with damaging wind the biggest concern.
By late week as the ridge continues to fade west, temperatures will cool slightly, but it will still remain hot and humid with highs reaching the low to mid 90s. We’ll see more scattered afternoon storms, which could lead to heavy downpours and gusty winds. These storms will help bring us some relief, but a real cool down isn’t in the cards for us until potentially closer to the 4th of of July, late next week.
Tropics Update:
Invest 90L is now located 700 miles ENE of Bermuda in the Central Atlantic. It still has a medium chance of developing into a tropical depression or storm today, but that window is closing quickly as it moves NE into a more hostile environment.

Heavy rain is likely over Nicarauga and Costa Rica through midweek, where a broad low and tropical wave are pumping in deep moisture. This area in the western Caribbean will be worth watching later this week as pressure lowers and convection picks up, possibly leading to some gradual development.
