Torrid temperatures continue

Temperatures likely won't crack 100° again this week, but heat indices will.

We’re over the hump for the workweek – and hopefully, temperatures are as well. Charlotte cracked 100° this Wednesday afternoon for the second time in two years, but this is only the Queen City’s third excursion into the triple digits since 2015. Near-record heat and humidity will continue to fuel isolated-to-scattered thunderstorms this evening; a few cells may pack gusts approaching 70 mph. While no one wants to see severe storms, most will gladly take the cooldown the rain brings with it.

Lows should dip back into the mid-to-lower 70s across the Piedmont and Foothills Wednesday night – a far cry from the near 80° temperatures we saw this morning – before highs surge back into the mid-90s. While afternoon temperatures likely won’t hit 100° this week, heat indices will as humidity levels remain oppressive. Much like today, isolated-to-scattered thunderstorms will take advantage of the plentiful atmospheric fuel in the afternoons; some of which may be severe. The classic summertime pattern continues into the weekend as highs around the Metro continue to hang in the mid-90s.
