RONDA, N.C. – Three people are dead and two others are in the hospital from a head-on collision in Wilkes County on Friday night, according to the North Carolina State Highway Patrol.
It happened around 7 p.m. on Red White and Blue Road near Ruth Linney Road, just west of Ronda, North Carolina.
Troopers said a Jeep Liberty was traveling north Red White and Blue Road. The Jeep crossed the centerline and collided head-on with a southbound Nissan Altima, authorities said.
The Jeep driver, 62-year-old Randy Johnson, was the sole occupant and died at the scene. He was not wearing a seatbelt, troopers said.
There were four occupants in the Nissan. The driver, 34-year-old Johnathan Laws, was transported by a medical helicopter to Hugh Chatham Health in Elkin where he died as a result of his injuries. A backseat passenger, 72-year-old Vickie Key, died on scene.
Two other passengers sustained non-life-threatening injuries and were transported by EMS to Hugh Chatham Health.
Troopers said neither speed nor alcohol were contributing factors in the collision.
