Gov. Stein visits areas hardest hit by Chantal flooding

ALAMANCE COUNTY, NC — North Carolina Governor Josh Stein is visiting some of the areas hardest hit by Tropical Storm Chantal.

He stopped in Alamance and Orange counties on Tuesday.

Officials in Mebane say work was already underway on a nearby dam when Helene hit the mountains last fall with historic levels of rain.

Governor Stein noted that recent repairs to that dam may have saved thousands of lives.

Local officials worried the dam might fail –they even evacuated some homes that could be flooded if it broke, but the new, higher dam held.
