Cornelius police corporal charged with DWI

CORNELIUS, NC – A corporal with the Cornelius Police Department is on leave after police in Concord arrested him on a number of traffic charges, including driving while impaired.

Cornelius Police say 43-year-old Corporal George Brinzey was off duty and driving his own vehicle, when a Concord Police officer stopped him for speeding at around 8:45 p.m. on July 12, 2025.

Brinzey has worked for the Cornelius Police Department since 2003, and is currently assigned to the lake patrol unit.

“As law enforcement officers, we are expected to uphold a higher standard of conduct at all times, both on and off duty. Any actions that fall below that standard, undermine public trust, and won’t be tolerated,” said Police Chief David Baucom. “Following department policy, we will conduct a thorough investigation of the incident and take all necessary actions. Our daily commitment is to earn and maintain the trust of our community. We have a responsibility to ensure accountability for anyone who violates the law,” said Baucom.

In addition to DWI, Brinzey is charged with careless and reckless driving, speeding, unregistered vehicle, fictitious tag and no insurance.
