UPDATE:

CHARLOTTE, NC – Two men face charges in connection to a mass shooting in Uptown Charlotte that left one man dead and five other people hurt.

Investigators say a security guard flagged down police on North College Street around 2 a.m. Sunday, who were working off-duty,Β  and pointed out a car saying the shooter had jumped inside.

According to an affidavit, 24-year-old Shawn Cannon is accused of driving that car. Police say he spoke with an officer, then drove off, leading police on a chase. Police lost sight of the car, and they later found it abandoned on Harris Cove Drive.

Court records show Cannon is charged with accessory after the fact of murder, possession of a firearm, possession of stolen firearm and flee to elude.

Court records also show 24-year-old Damien Evans is charged with possession of a firearm by a felon and possession of a stolen firearm.

An affidavit says Evans got into the same car Cannon is accused of driving after the shootings.

UPDATE (7/14/25):

CHARLOTTE, NC – Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police say 37-year-old Arleigh Bryant is dead after a shooting in Uptown Charlotte over the weekend.

Police found Bryant on North College Street around 2 a.m. on Sunday while responding to a call about shots being fired.

Medic took three other shooting victims to the hospital with non life-threatening injuries. Two other victims went to the hospital on their own.

Police say there are two suspects in custody and they believe there are more shooters. Investigators seized seven guns from the scene Sunday morning.

“You can see some of the individuals who we believe are suspects in the case, running past cars with their blue lights on. That is how how brazen, how callous this is,” CMPD Deputy Chief Ryan Butler said in a press conference Monday.

CMPD launched Operation Heartbeat earlier this year hoping the steady blue lights would reduce crime. Officers also patrol Uptown on foot and bike during the weekend. At the time of the incident, police say there were at least nine officers on duty in the area. Bryant’s death marks the third deadly shooting victim in two weeks within a half mile of each other.

“Are there changes that need to be made? Yes. So, that’s when we look into a variety of things regarding, you know, security profile, the businesses, the security practices that they have in place for their patrons. You know, the traffic flow,” Deputy Chief Butler said.

If you know anything that can help detectives with this case call Crime Stoppers at 704-334-1600. You don’t have to leave your name or testify and you could get a cash reward.
