UPDATE: Suspect killed after police in Gastonia say he shot at them
GASTONIA, NC – A suspect is dead after police say he opened fire on them in Gastonia.
Police were called about an assault at a home on Hickory Hollow Road around 10:30 Thursday night.
When they arrived, police say a relative told them that Jeremy Bonham had a gun inside the home and had fired at least one shot.
Police say Bonham came from the back of the home and opened fire on officers with a rifle.
The officers fired back, killing Bonham. No police were hurt.
Gastonia Police Chief Trent Conard says 10 officers who were involved are on paid administrative leave, which is standard procedure, while the incident is investigated.
The North Carolina State Bureau of Investigation is investigating the shooting.
