UPDATE: Judge sets bond for Newton Police officer charged with second-degree murder
UPDATE:
NEWTON, NC – A judge set bond Tuesday for 28-year-old Newton Police Lieutenant Carlos Uribe at $100,000.
Uribe is charged with second-degree murder in the shooting death of 21-year-old Camden Childers.
In court, prosecutors outlined what investigators say happened the night of the shooting on June 26th.
They say Childers was driving a motorcycle and led officers on three chases and that police broke off chase at least twice.
They say the third part of the chase ended with Childers crashed his motorcycle into Uribe’s patrol car.
Prosecutors say Childers did not have a weapon and had his arms raised in surrender.
They say Uribe kicked the suspect in the abdomen and then fired one shot into his chest while his hands were still down.
Uribe then said “that’s what you get for going for an officer’s gun,” according to prosecutors.
The district attorney said after a thorough review of body-worn camera footage, dash camera footage and witness interviews, his office decided the use of deadly force was not legally justified.
