GASTONIA, NC – The City of Gastonia has new guidelines for how its temporary cooling station will operate.
The cooling station at 107 South Broad Street will give people a break from the heat from 10am until 7pm.
It will operate outdoors when forecasted highs are 90-94 Degrees and will move indoors at the facility when forecasted highs are 95 Degrees or above.
The City says it is now using temperature forecasts from the National Weather Service and that the decision on whether to open the cooling station will be made 48 hours in advance to give time to coordinate.
The new guidelines will remain in effect until August 6th. Gastonia City Council will discuss the status of the cooling center at its August 5th meeting.
Here are the cooling station rules:
- Shirts, shoes, and appropriate clothing must be worn at all times
- No food allowed inside the cooling station
- No lying down or sleeping on the premises
- No weapons or firearms allowed
- No smoking, vaping, or open tobacco products
- No alcohol permitted
- No illegal drugs or substances
- No marijuana products or paraphernalia
- No profanity
- No showers or bathing
- No inappropriate behavior, including but not limited to: Harassment, Violence, Aggression, Destruction of property
- No loitering or gathering outside of designated cooling areas
- No trespassing after hours
