Copper wire thieves force south Charlotte nonprofit to find a new location

CHARLOTTE, NC — A Charlotte woman trying to do some good in her community is dealing with a pretty bad situation. Her nonprofit’s building in South End has been burglarized several times this month. Stripped of potentially hundreds of thousands of dollars of copper wiring.

“I don’t like coming here somewhere where I want to do so much good and feeling like someone is coming in and in doing so much bad,” said Meredith Loveland.

Loveland founded the nonprofit, Clothed With Care. A charlotte based organization that gives high end clothing to people in need.,

“I had a good heart. I was like, surely no one’s coming in here to bother us. I mean, we’re a nonprofit giving clothing provisions out to the community,” Loveland said.

Loveland said thieves stole almost $60,000 worth of copper wiring the first time around. Loveland says the building has been hit at least twice since then. She believes hundreds of thousands of dollars worth of copper wire have been stolen in that time.

When the buildings owner donated the space, it was agreed they wouldn’t make repairs. That means the space has no light and with no AC, Loveland is scrambling to find a new place to store mounds of clothes and stacks of boxes before mold sets in.

“It’s hard. It takes a little bit of the wind out of your sails,” explained Loveland.

Loveland hopes someone will come forward with a new place for the nonprofit to move the clothes or get enough donations to be able to afford a new location.
