MIAMI – Tropical Storm Erin formed Monday morning in the eastern Atlantic Ocean, roughly 500 miles west of the West African coast.

Erin is the fifth named storm of the 2025 Atlantic season. It was about 280 miles west-northwest of the Cabo Verde Islands, with maximum sustained winds of 45 mph, the NHC said. It was moving west at about 20 mph.

Erin will strengthen over the coming days as it treks west, likely becoming the first Atlantic hurricane of the season by Thursday morning. The NHC has forecast Erin to become a major Category 3 hurricane by the weekend.

Fortunately, virtually all long-range models turn Erin northward early next week over the open ocean and well away from the Carolinas. While a positive sign, we’ll still want to watch Erin closely on its westward journey – any small changes in the track right now could have major implications on the forecast in the future.
