Hot start to workweek, Erin re-strengthens
Hurricane Erin has reclaimed Category 4 strength after a brief weakening period on Sunday.
Summer still reigns supreme across the Carolinas as we slide into August’s latter half. Highs surge into the 90s for a fourth-straight day around the Metro this Monday afternoon as the sunshine continues its dominance over our Queen City sky. Cooler conditions return on Tuesday for much of the WCCB Charlotte viewing area as a cold front stalls just to our north, hemming in moisture and increased cloud coverage. While widespread rain is not in the forecast, a few scattered showers and storms may pop up at times over the next 48 hours. Highs sink into the mid-to-upper 80s for most Piedmont and Foothills communities between Tuesday and Thursday. Another significant cooldown may arrive by the weekend as a ridge of high pressure sets up to our north in Hurricane Erin’s wake.
Hurricane Erin has reclaimed Category 4 strength with core winds approaching 130 mph after a brief weakening period on Sunday. As of Monday morning, Erin is located just east of the Bahamas and is in the middle of its northward turn as it skirts east of the U.S. mainland. While Erin will stay well east of the Carolinas this week and won’t bring any direct impacts to our area, the storm could cause significant issues for our beaches in the form of rough surf, rip currents, and storm surge. Dare County officials in North Carolina have issued mandatory evacuations for Hatteras Island on the Outer Banks as rising tides between Tuesday and Thursday could overwhelm beaches, roads, and homes along the coast. If you’re heading to the beach this week, please heed officials’ warnings and stay out of the water when possible within the Tuesday-Thursday timeframe.
