Mecklenburg Co chief deputy resigns in scathing letter

CHARLOTTE, NC –  A second chief deputy has resigned from the Mecklenburg County Sheriff’s office in less than a year.

WCCB Charlotte obtained Christopher Allen’s scathing two page resignation letter.

It is dated August 18, 2025 and addressed to Sheriff Garry McFadden.  In the letter, Allen claims he has “…endured constant backstabbing, lies, disrespect and false narratives, all orchestrated by you, in an attempt to assassinate my character. The fact that you willingly coerced other staff members to malign me in many ways, greatly contributed to my inability to no longer trust you.”

Allen also said, “After being under your leadership for the last year, I have come to the realization that your values and morals do not align with mine.”

Allen claims McFadden created a hostile work environment and that he suffered both mentally and physically due to “abusive and narcissistic behaviors.”

Sheriff McFadden released a statement about Allen’s resignation. “I want to reassure our staff and community that the Mecklenburg County Sheriff’s Office (MCSO) remains strong and committed to its mission,” Sheriff McFadden said. “MCSO will stay focused on what matters most, serving with integrity, keeping our community safe, and working hard for the people of Mecklenburg County.”

Another Chief Deputy, Kevin Canty, resigned last November. He wrote a scathing public letter about his reasons why, calling the sheriff  “insecure” and “unprofessional.”

He also said McFadden lies and runs the department like a “third-world dictatorship.”
