Mother demanding justice after 97-year-old driver leaves her son in ICU

CHARLOTTE, N.C. – A mother is demanding justice after a 97-year-old driver hit her son with a car in South Charlotte. The victim is in the hospital with some serious injuries and it appears the driver has faced no consequences.

Diego Mora was riding his bike down Providence Road last month when he got hit by a truck.

For the last month, the hospital has been home for the Mora family while their 32 year old son is in the ICU.

“They gave 24 hour life to my son. They told me he never going to walk again. He never going to talk again. He never going to do nothing. He just stay like a vegetable in the bed,” Luz Mora said. “That’s what the doctors say, but my primary doctor is God.”

Mora was riding his bike around sunset along Providence Road on august 6th when he got hit by a truck. According to the crash report, the driver was 97 years old. Mora’s mother says his license was set to expire days after the crash.

“They told us this is a just a case, just a crash accident,” Mora said. “And that’s not just a crash accident. Because my son, he’s in the ICU for something somebody else did to him.”

The crash report says the driver claimed he couldn’t see Mora because he was wearing dark clothes. In North Carolina, drivers older than 66 must renew their license every five years while everyone else renews every eight years.

“I’m scared for, you know, everybody. It’s not just cyclists. I’m scared about other drivers and other pedestrians because this person does not have probably the reaction,” Mathew Fisher, Diego’s Friend said.

Mora’s mom says she will keep fighting for justice as long as it takes.

“I just want to ask everybody pray for him, because the pray is the best medicine for him and I have a lot of support,” Mora said.

The Mora family has hired an attorney to do their own investigation into the crash.

WCCB reached out to CMPD about the out the status of this case and haven’t heard back. There is a Gofundme set up for the Mora family.
