Hot & sunny Wednesday, unsettled pattern ahead

We'll also want to keep a close eye on the tropics through early next week.

Happy Hump Day! The summer renaissance to kick off fall reaches a head this Wednesday afternoon as highs soar into the lower 90s across much of the Piedmont and Foothills. While autumn-lovers have likely been miserable so far this season, more seasonable temperatures aren’t far away as a cold front approaches from the west. The cooldown will come at a rainy price; isolated showers and thunderstorms will be limited to areas northwest of the Metro this afternoon, but most communities will get in on the action as we head into the final two days of the workweek.

A Level 1 out of 5 risk for severe weather has been posted for the entirety of the WCCB Charlotte viewing area on Thursday as scattered gusty storms roll through the Carolinas. Models are split on exactly how much rain we’ll see between Thursday and Friday, but most agree that much of the region will receive at least a half-inch, with localized amounts approaching 2″ possible. The weekend ahead is also trending wetter as the incoming front stalls just east of the Queen City, but the forecast remains uncertain beyond Friday.

We’ll also want to keep a close eye on the tropics over the next several days. The National Hurricane Center (NHC) is monitoring two areas north of the Caribbean for likely tropical development – one of which could sling moisture toward the Carolinas early next week. The track of these two systems, which may form within 500 miles of each other, is highly uncertain right now. Your WCCB weather team will keep you weather-wise as the forecast becomes clearer over the coming days. The next two names on the 2025 Atlantic list are Humberto and Imelda.
