Swim Across America Event near Charlotte benefitting cancer research

CHARLOTTE, NC – Swimmers and volunteers of all ages are coming together for a good cause this weekend.
They’re participating in the ninth annual Swim Across America.

Event director for swim across America Charlotte. Patty Waldron, a 15-year-old two time cancer survivor and swimmer Drennan Shall and his mom Dr. Amanda Dale-Shall joined Rising to talk about the event and why it’s important.

The event is Sunday, October 5, 2025, at Camp Thunderbird in Lake Wylie, South Carolina

The goal is to raise critical funds for cancer research.

The Charlotte-area open water swim is one of the organization’s last events of the swim season and is a highlight of the year for swimmers from throughout the area.

Participants can choose from .5-mile, 1-mile or 2-mile swim options, with a same-day pool swim also available. Proceeds benefit Atrium Health Levine Cancer and Levine Children’s Hospital in Charlotte.
